As many of you might know, the House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would defund Planned Parenthood for a year while the organization is investigated. (Here is an article about the vote and here is an article about the possible consequences if the bill passes). This is unacceptable! Wooster Vox is holding a letter writing campaign to let our representatives know that we are absolutely against this bill. If you'd like to add your voice (you can send letters to your senator or representative at Wooster or from home), follow this link.
Q: Will you be having a GYT this year?
A: Yes!! The GYT (Get Yourself Tested) for fall semester will be next Thursday, September 24th. It'll be in Lowry 119 (like last semester) starting at 4:30pm and ending at 7pm. This year we will only have STI testing, but the Wellness Center is now offering free HIV testing on Wednesdays from 1:30pm til 2:30pm if that's what you're looking for. Look out for Vox tabling next Wednesday and Thursday for free condoms and dental dams! Q: Where can I go to get an IUD?
A: While you can get some forms of birth control like barriers and birth control pills through the Wellness Center here on campus, they do not implant IUDs. For that, you'll probably have to go to Cleveland Clinic, which is located fairly close to campus on Cleveland Road. The Wellness Center on campus does have gynecologists available for appointments on Mondays and Thursdays, if you're interested in talking to someone about what birth control method is best for you. Good luck! Edit: Planned Parenthood in Wooster also offers IUDs, both the hormonal and copper versions. You can either make an appointment or walk in during business hours. More info here. Q: Sometimes when I'm in bed with my girlfriend and I suggest us trying something new or different, she says yes, however it's not very enthusiastic. I'm worried about pressuring her into things she doesn't want to do, and am wondering how I can talk to her about this?
A: First of all, it's so great that you're concerned about this! Of course it's going to be a little awkward to talk about, but it's super important to make sure you're fully communicating with your partner, especially in terms of consenting to different things in bed. It's probably a good idea to have this conversation outside of the bedroom, too. You can bring up the subject with something like, "Hey, when I asked if we could try that thing the other night I noticed you didn't seem very excited to try it. Are you really okay with it, because I wouldn't want you to do anything you're not comfortable with." Also, there are some things that you can do while trying new things in bed to make sure your partner is comfortable the whole time. Using the color system is a great way to communicate with your partner when you might not want to get into a lengthy conversation during sex. During sex, simply ask your partner how they're doing, or what color they're at. RED- STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING. This means your partner is uncomfortable with what is happening. Stop what you're doing and ask them if they're okay, and ask them what you can do to get back to green if they still want to continue having sex. Alternatives to this is your partner holding an object and dropping it when they get to red (useful when you're partner has something in their mouth or can't talk for some other reason), or using a safe word. YELLOW- I'm not enjoying this very much, go back to green. This means that your partner is not enjoying what is going on, however they probably aren't in pain. It is still very important to stop what you're doing. GREEN- Everything's good. This means that your partner is enjoying what is going on. BLUE- I need a break. You're partner may still be enjoying what's going on, however, they may need a breather, a bathroom break, a snack, anything. It's good to respect this so they can keep enjoying your sexy time together. In addition to all of this, you should also see if your partner has anything they want to try in bed, because sexy time should be fun for everyone involved. Q: [Paraphrased] My boyfriend smells weird, could it be part of his diet? Also, his semen smells bad, is this normal?
A: This is a rather difficult question to answer, especially in regard to his body odor in his nether regions. A bad smell could be caused by things like STI's, hygiene practices, skin conditions, etc. It could also just be his natural body odor. If it really is that unbearable, you may want to suggest him talking to his general physician or a dermatologist about the issue. In regard to his semen, this is also rather difficult to answer. There are many factors that go into one's semen's scent, appearance, and texture. Semen does have a natural chlorine-y smell, so if that's what you're smelling, it's natural. His diet may be a factor, especially if he eats a lot of fatty foods, red meats, etc., and very little fruit. Adding sweet fruit to one's diet may change the smell and taste, however it is not an end-all-be-all solution. You may refer to this article and video for some information, but again, if it's pretty bad, maybe suggest that he should talk to his doctor because it could be a sign of something worse. If he does not have a doctor at home that he can visit on breaks, suggest that he make an appointment at the Wellness Center on campus, or with the local Planned Parenthood Office. Q: What is a dental dam and why should I use one?
